Fair Housing: HUD Settles Housing Discrimination Case Involving Child with Respiratory Disability

In an effort to educate our members about the Fair Housing Act, we ask that you review the situation below. While this situation happened in a different state, the Greater Lehigh Valley REALTORS® feels it can bring further fair housing knowledge to local Realtors® and consumers.

HUD Settles Housing Discrimination Case

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced resolution of a housing discrimination case from California for just under $11,000. The complainants are a family with a child who has a respiratory disability. The issues involved a request from the family to move to a unit away from neighbors who were heavy smokers. Disability, of course, is one of the protected classes under the federal Fair Housing Act.
